CAL or Client Access License is a license for clients (either devices or users) to have the right to access Microsoft server products either directly or indirectly.
In its sales, Microsoft sells CAL in 2 versions, namely Device CAL and User CAL.
This time we will discuss, which CAL is suitable for us to use in our environment.
Device CAL
Device CAL is a CAL that binds to the device.
The Device CAL purchase solution is more intended for companies that have devices that are accessed by more than 1 user, for example a call center / company that has employees who work in shifts but use the same device.
In the picture below, it can be seen that there are 2 devices that access 2 servers but 1 device is used by many users, so the purchase of Device CAL will be more effective than the purchase of User CAL.
User CAL
User CAL is a CAL that binds to the user, the user in this sense is an internal employee.
The User CAL purchase solution is more intended for companies that have users who access servers with more than 1 device, for example, 1 user accesses email with 3 devices that he has (Notebook, Smartphone and Tablet).
In the picture below, it can be seen that there are 2 users who access 2 servers but use 3 different devices, so purchasing a User CAL will be more effective than purchasing a Device CAL, even though the price of a User CAL is more expensive than a Device CAL, but if you buy 3 Device CALs for the same 1 user, it will be cheaper if you buy only 1 User CAL.
