Ashura
The day of ‘Ashura or 10 Muharram is a great day, on that day Allah saved prophets Musa and Harun ‘alaihimas salam and the Children of Israel from the pursuit of Pharaoh and his army in the Red Sea.
To be grateful for this great favor, the Jews were commanded to observe the fast of ‘Ashura.
Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: “The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) arrived in Madinah and saw the Jews fasting the day of ‘Ashoora’. He asked them: “What is this?”
They replied, “This is a good day. On this day Allah saved the Children of Israel from their enemies. So Prophet Moses fasted on this day.”
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “I am more worthy of the Prophet Moses than you are.” So he fasted ‘Ashoora’ and ordered the Companions to fast ‘Ashoora’.” (narrated by Bukhari (2204) and Muslim (1130).

‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: “When the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) fasted ‘Ashoora’ and ordered the Companions to fast ‘Ashoora’, the Companions said: “O Messenger of Allah, this is a day that is honored by the Jews and Christians.”
So he said, “In that case, next year we will also fast the ninth day, in sha Allah.”
It turned out that the following year had not yet come, and the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) had passed away.” (Muslim no. 1134)
