[2017] Troubled Times Video Lyric – Greenday’s First Step Against Trump

2 min read
If you’ve ever even slightly heard of the movements of indie music groups like Superman Is Dead, Marjinal and other music groups that breathe ‘Punk’ in Indonesia, this will be a bit interesting.
On the other hand, it’s going to be boring, because it’s been a long time since I’ve rewritten the music scene from an amateur writer’s point of view, haha.
Like SID’s Jrx, Marjinal’s Mike, Greenday’s Billie Joe Armstrong is very busy doing his homework.
On the recent Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the US, Green Day honors the civil rights leader while criticizing president-elect Donald Trump in their latest lyric video “Troubled Times,” a track from their latest album Revolution Radio. [ rollingstone.co.id]
This video was certainly not planned for Trump.
It’s just that the lyrics that Billie Joe created in Trouble Times, are very suitable for the current state of America.
“A new day dawning / Comes without warning / So don’t think twice / We live in troubled times,” this is what may have triggered Greenday’s reaction to insert their attitude towards Trump’s election as America’s new President.
As Greenday had done before in the album American Idiot [2004], they frontally expressed their stance on government policies.
Slightly different from American Idiot which did not clearly criticize a leader, in this Trouble Times video, you can find Trump’s face clearly displayed with flames around his head.
The video brings together images from famous protests and moments of resistance and uprising – women’s suffrage, the Civil Rights Movement – with images of Trump-like figures wearing “Make America Great Again” hats spreading hateful messages to the masses. Green Day recently made it clear how they felt about Trump in their performances at both the MTV EMAs and the American Music Awards, where the group added a shout of “No Trump, no KKK, no fascist USA” during “Bang Bang”. Before Trump was elected, Billie Joe had already expressed a stance on Trump’s entry as an American presidential candidate.
Personally, Bill Joe is very active in anti-racist campaigns.

Of course, Trump’s election was a concern for Billie personally.
Seeing his racist policies.
One of President Donald Trump’s controversial policies in his executive order is to blacklist 7 Muslim-majority countries from entering the United States (US).
The seven citizens who are prohibited from entering Uncle Sam’s country are Syria, Iraq, Iran, Yemen, Libya, Somalia and Sudan.
In addition to banning the citizens of the seven countries, Trump also ordered to stop the steps of all refugees who want to enter the super-power country.

Of course, this homework will be more impactful if done together.
As exposed in public, most of the USA music collectives tend to move alone.
Unlike in Indonesia, where music collectives and like-minded communities always synergize to make joint movements.
